Some Muslim youths are reportedly planning a protest in Sokoto State to demand the release of two suspects arrested in connection with the gruesome murder of Deborah Samuel Yakubu. According to report, the youths agreed to meet at the Gawon Nama Roundabout by 9am. The Federal Government has reportedly expressed optimism that the decisions reached in its three-part meeting with university-based unions would yield fruits next week. The Head, Press and Public Relations in the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Mr Olajide Oshundun, in a statement on Friday, said some agreements had been reached between the government and the unions. The Academic Staff Union of Universities, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, the Non-Academic Staff Union, and the Association of Academic Technologists are currently on strike. The young lady, simply identified as Mirabel who trended in a viral video having carnal knowledge with a dog in the Lekki area of Lagos has reportedly died of infection at a private hospital in Yaba. Reports gathered that the lady had been on admission since Sunday last week after she collapsed and went into a coma. It was also added that the deceased confessed to the doctor when the test result showed that she was suffering from what looks like canine brucellosis, and which can only be contracted from a dog. The Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) has reportedly withdrawn the accreditation given to Abia State University school of medical sciences for the study of medicine and surgery. The regulatory body withdrew the approval following a long trail of inadequacies at the Abia State University Teaching Hospital, Aba (ABSUTH) which is the training environment for Clinical Medical Students and forms part of the teaching facilities. An elder statesman and senior lawyer, Robert Clarke, SAN, has on Monday said the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), should be granted an extension of tenure to curb the issues of insecurity in the country. The Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Federal Universities in Nigeria has expressed total displeasure over the extension of the warning strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) by another 12 weeks, saying the development would further slow down Nigeria’s progress. Figures obtained from the Central Bank of Nigeria have revealed that NIGERIA’S monthly debt service rose by $31.46m in one month to $101.29m in January. This indicates a 45 per cent increase month-on-month. The CBN reportedly disclosed in its data on debt service repayment that the government spent $69.83m on debt service repayment in December. The data also showed that the government spent $148.57m and $85.23 on debt service repayment in November and October 2021 respectively. The Debt Management Office had disclosed that Nigeria’s outstanding debt stood at N39.57tn or $95.78bn as of the end of December 2021. It added that total external debt gulped 40.08 per cent, totalling N15.86tn or $38.39bn in the period under review. The total public debt rose from N27.4tn or $80.05bn as of the end of December 2019 to N32.92tn or $86.4bn as of the end of December 2021. The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), has on Monday 9th May, 2022, vowed to block all federal roads and airports in the country to protest the 12-week extension of the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities. Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, of Rivers state has responded to the 48-hour ultimatum given to him by members of the socio,-cultural organization of the Ijaw nation to release House of Representatives member, Hon Farah Dagogo. The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has filed a suit before a Federal High Court in Abuja over the alleged plan to disqualify him from the 2023 presidential primaries slated for the end of this month. Reports gathered that, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has given political parties a deadline of June 3 to submit their candidates for the 2023 elections. Meanwhile, Lawyers and critics had argued that Emefiele was unfit to run going by Section 84 (12) of the Electoral Act. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has reportedly announced that it had begun mobilisation of its members for a three-day warning strike. This comes after Ultimatum given to federal government ends. The NLC took the decision at a meeting with University-based unions in Abuja where a 21-day ultimatum was issued to the government to meet the demands of the unions. The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics has said it will not attend a meeting with the Federal Government scheduled for Monday, May 9. According to the National President of ASUP, Anderson Ezeibe, the four-week notice of strike, which the union gave the FG to meet its demands began on April 4, 2022 and ended on May 4, 2022. An official of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has reportedly ruled out the rescheduling of the examination for some candidates who missed the UTME examination as a result of heavy downpours in Lagos and other major cities.  According to him, it was against the policy of the board to reschedule examination for some candidates when others took the same examination in the same city or centre. He added that that only candidates affected by technical challenges as a result of their centres would have the opportunity to retake the examination. The Academic Staff Union of Universities has reportedly threatened to sanction members who comply with the directive of the management of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma to resume and present students’ results. Reports gathered that the management of the school had asked Heads of Departments to present the recently released first batch of 2019/2020 results to their respective Deans for National Youth Service Corps mobilisation. But the Chairman of ASUU, AAU Ekpoma, Dr Cyril Onogbosele, in a circular obtained by newsmen on Sunday, asked the union members not to comply with the university’s directive. The Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (CVCNU) has reportedly called on FG and ASUU, to resolve lingering issues to end the ongoing strike. This was disclosed on Sunday, in Abuja by the Chairman of the committee, Prof. Samuel Edoumiekumo. According to him, it was crucial for both parties to come to an agreement to end the strike as soon as possible. He urged them to honour agreements entered into for academic activities to commence in the affected universities. “We have already given a press release arising from the meeting of the general assembly of the committee. We said that ASUU and FG should amicably resolve all lingering issues,” he said.
