"Release and pay me 5 billion naira for infringing on my rights" - Kanu tells Buhari government

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, had reportedly petitioned an Abia State High Court to order the Nigerian government to release Kanu and pay him the sum of 5 billion naira as compensation for infringing on his fundamental human rights.

He stated this, in a communique disclosed by his Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, on Tuesday, 7th September, 2021.

According to Ejimakor, Nnamdi Kanu’s rights were infringed upon in 2017, when Nigerian Army invaded his residence in Afaraukwu, Abia State. Including, his abduction in Kenya and repatriation back to Nigeria, as well as his extraordinary rendition to the country. “Today, I secured an order from the Abia state High Court to serve by substitute, an application for infringement to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu's fundamental human rights, which I lately brought before the state High Court," he said.

The Counsel further solicited some reliefs from the court on the violation of Nnamdi Kanu’s fundamental rights. Amongst the sought reliefs, he petitioned the court to compel the Nigerian Government to apologise to Kanu openly, and as well, publish an apology letter in national dailies.

Recall that, Nnamdi Kanu was first arrested in 2017, but was however, granted bail at Abuja Federal High Court, by Justice Binta Nyako. Shortly after the bail, his residence was invaded by Nigeria soldiers. Kanu, who alleged that the soldiers were on a mission to kill him, fled Nigeria to Europe, where he continued his Biafra agitation, but was re-arrested in Kenya and repatriated back to Nigeria, where he was locked up in custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
