HOW A LAW STUDENT OF UNIZIK LOST HER LIFE DUE TO THE NEGLIGENCE OF THE HOSTEL MANAGEMENT

A 100L student of Law in Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka identified as Miss Ajana Isabella who is being said to have been battling with diabetes, reportedly breathed her last in early hours of Wednesday, 9th July 2025 due to the negligence of her hostel - Elmada.

According to reports made available to eruditenewsblog, her demise was as a result of the hostel's management refusal to allow her have access to her room spare key after she lost her's. "The hostel has this policy that an inmate in a room of 3, who lost his or her key has to pay a sum of 40k per head before gaining access to the spare key, this is to discourage the students from being careless with their keys. And Isabella pleaded with the said management to wit: Aunty Ukamaka and Madam Bright who were on morning session the said day about her chronic illness and the need to retrieve her medication (insulin) from inside her room but the hostel managers asked her and her roommates to pay the said fixed amount before she could provide them with a spare key."

"She eventually collapsed and was rushed to hospital. The hostel was asked to pray for her but her condition got critical. She went into hypoglycemic shock, my eyeballs were soaked with tears."

"This morning she couldn't struggle for her life again and so gave up the ghost. It's so disheartening - Isabella's call to Nnamdi Azikiwe University LAWSA Bar is in few days time. We did discuss about our LAWSA dinner and the gown we'll be wearing, but my dear friend couldn't live to see the day she has been preparing for."

"I pray her soul rest in peace while we seek justice from whom ever concerned on her behalf and so no other person will be a victim to this negligence by Elmada hostel management." the source who choosed to remain anonymous said.

Confirming the incident, Okoye Chidalu Lauretta also a 100 level law student of Unizik, narrated his ordeal in the hands of same hostel management.

According to him, "the key to my room got missing, I and my roommates were asked to pay 120k (40k each) which I earlier refused to pay and for that I was locked outside in the middle of the night - past ten (10) precisely, till my mum paid the money."

Meanwhile, another student identified as OBIAMAKA in her own report said: "I remember how I went through a lot cause of this bad management last semester."

"Our bathroom drainage was faulty, we complained everyday from January, it got to a point where we had to plead with aunty Nonye in block B cause our room started smelling and water started coming up and was entering the room already, we couldn’t stay in the room again. It was aunty Nonye who helped us beg till they repaired it during that exam period. Since January. Later on, we had this same key issue and they were saying there’s no spare, that we should contribute 480k because they will have to break the door down and import another one form Canada."

"Something really needs to be done, cause why won’t they have a spare key and then when something happens they will blame you forgetting they are supposed to have spare key." She concluded.

The Student Union Government of the institution ably led by Comr. Eze Samuel is said to be on this recent development alongside the said Faculty President, Comr. Elujekwute Charles Chidera and his executive members amongst other concerned individuals, to ensure justice is being done regarding the issue.

This article will be updated when more details and further development is being made available.

    1. Funny how someone was arguing for the management on only enforcing the hostel's rules which the girl knows and probably a signatory to.. To me, in as much as all man dey entitled to their opinion in any case, this should be exiled, cause consent to rules does not absolve negligence in emergency situations, and inshort, the act has one major thing to say: THE MANAGEMENT WERE PRIORITIZING THEIR POCKET OVER ISABELLA'S HEALTH

  10. Is it because their children don't have diabetes and I'm sure that those women are both married or their siblings have children. What kind of power hungry and money making management is this?
May God console the parents πŸ™πŸ™πŸ™πŸ™
