The Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, called on its clergy, members and the wider public to remain calm and allow ongoing ecclesiastical and judicial processes to take their course.
The appeal follows recent public statements and court actions linked to decisions by the Primate of All Nigeria. In a press statement, Ven. Raphael Adedoyin Aderinwale, Director of Communication of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, said the actions now before the courts were not taken lightly. They followed an extended period of enquiry into questions of ecclesiastical authority, accountability and compliance with established Church procedures. Efforts had also been made to resolve the disagreements through conciliatory engagement.
Citing 1 Corinthians 14:40, which calls for all things to be done decently and in order, Ven. Aderinwale emphasised that peace must go hand in hand with accountability, mutual respect and canonical order. “Reconciliation remains an essential Christian obligation, but it must be pursued within the framework of the Church’s Constitution, Canons and established procedures,” he stated.
He further stressed that the Most Rev’d Dr Henry Chukwudum Ndukuba, Archbishop, Metropolitan and Primate of All Nigeria, remains subject to the Church’s Constitution, Canons and established processes, just as any other Church leader. The matter should therefore be handled through the appropriate institutional and judicial channels, with fairness, restraint and respect for the rule of law.
Anglican faithful were urged to remain prayerful, steadfast and united, and to refrain from speculation or unwholesome public exchanges. The public and the media were also encouraged to exercise restraint while the processes continue.
“The Church remains confident that truth, justice, Christian discipline and peace are best served by respect for due process. All concerned Christian faithful should uphold the dignity of the Church and to seek the resolution of differences in a manner consistent with Christian witness and the rule of law.” the statement concluded.
