More Details Emerge on Circumstances Surrounding Murder of 23 Year Old Mmesoma by Abakiliki Boyfriend
Fresh accounts have provided a clearer timeline of the events leading to the death of 23 year old Mmesoma Umeora of Awarasi Village, Uga, in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Mmesoma was reported missing on Friday, October 16, 2026. According to investigative accounts, her former boyfriend, Chima Ofoeke, invited her to his residence in Uga even though the pair had already separated. Ofoeke claimed he had previously rented an apartment for her, paid for her shop, funded her skills training, and provided the sewing machine she used in her business.
Mmesoma arrived at the residence on a commercial motorcycle. Before the rider departed, she collected his phone number and instructed him to call her when she was ready to leave so he could return and pick her up. The rider waited, but she never made contact.
The following day, the concerned rider attempted to reach her without success. After police issued a public appeal for information on her disappearance and circulated her photograph, the rider recognised her and came forward. He informed investigators that he had taken her to the location on the day she went missing.
Ofoeke reportedly visited the police station on several occasions, presenting himself as someone searching for his missing former girlfriend. Officers grew suspicious and continued their inquiries. A search of his residence did not immediately yield a major breakthrough but recovered a broken phone and a SIM card believed to belong to Mmesoma. When confronted with the items, Ofoeke changed his account and eventually confessed to killing her, stating that the two had fought.
Circulating claims allege that Mmesoma had earlier been warned to stay away from Ofoeke due to suspected ritual intentions. These remain unverified allegations and have not been established by credible evidence.
Mmesoma’s body was later recovered from a sack dumped in a gutter along a bushy section of the Okigwe-Oba Expressway in Unubi, Nnewi South Local Government Area. She was buried today - October 24, 2026, in Uga. Family members, friends and community residents gathered for the funeral amid widespread grief and expressions of outrage over the circumstances of her death.
Chima Ofoeke is an indigene of Ebonyi State who resided in Uga. This contradicts earlier inaccurate reports from some platforms, including Sahara Reporters and others, that suggested he was from Anambra State.
The Anambra State Police Command subsequently arrested Ofoeke. The arrest followed a formal report by Mmesoma’s mother to the Divisional Police Officer at Umuchu Division that her daughter had been missing since October 16 despite efforts to locate her. Acting on intelligence and in collaboration with members of the Agunechemba security outfit in Uga, officers took Ofoeke into custody.
During preliminary interrogation, he allegedly confessed to killing Umeorini after the breakdown of their relationship. He stated that he killed her in his house in Uga, placed her body in a bag and dumped it. In a circulating video, he said: “I killed her because she broke up with me. I killed her in my house in Uga, put her inside a bag and dumped her somewhere.” He further described strangling her with her clothes until she collapsed. He then led detectives to the recovery site.
Police Public Relations Officer SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the developments in a statement. Commissioner of Police Nnanna Oji Ama has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for a full and diligent investigation. The command has urged the public to report missing persons and suspicious activities promptly.
