[Full Report] UNIZIK Acting VC Suspends Medical Doctor Amongst Others Over Ajana Isabella's Untimely Death
The Acting Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Prof. Carol Arinze-Umobi, following the tragic death of Miss Isabella Chioma Ajana, a 100-level law student, has suspended doctors, nurses, and security personnel on duty at the UNIZIK Medical Centre on the day of the incident, citing negligence to have contributed to the student’s untimely passing.
In a press statement by the Acting VC, the suspension is going to run for 3 months in the first instance, during which all investigations would have been concluded. She also called for the immediate dismissal of the hostel supervisor of Elmada Hostel, who was in custody of the spare key and couldn't return it after repeated calls on her, adding that the relationship between the hostel and the university will be re-evaluated. See full statement below:
Recall that, Miss Chioma Ajana, a 100L student of Law in the school and a Type 1 diabetes patient, passed away on Friday, July 4, 2025, after a series of events that began on Saturday, June 28, when she and her roommates were locked out of their room at Elmada Hostel, a facility jointly managed by UNIZIK and a private firm.
According to a press release by the UNIZIK Students’ Union Government (SUG) through the PRO, the students were unable to access a spare key to retrieve Chioma’s insulin and essential medication, as the key custodian was reportedly out of state and unreachable. Despite efforts to manage her condition overnight, Chioma’s health deteriorated rapidly. The spare key was retrieved on Monday morning, June 30, as reported, but the insulin administration came too late to stabilize her. She was rushed to the UNIZIK Medical Centre, which was unable to provide adequate care and referred her to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital. Although she showed signs of improvement by Thursday, Chioma tragically passed away the following day.
The incident has sparked outrage within the university community and beyond, with the SUG and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Zone F demanding justice and systemic reforms. The SUG condemned the negligence of Elmada Hostel authorities for failing to act urgently and criticized the UNIZIK Medical Centre’s consistent inability to handle emergencies. They also questioned the inaction of nearby students who could have escalated the situation.
In a press release dated July 10, 2025, the SUG outlined their demands, to wit:
- A thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Chioma’s death.
- An overhaul of Elmada Hostel’s emergency access protocols.
- An independent audit and upgrade of the university’s medical centre.
- Disciplinary and legal consequences for those found culpable.
NANS Zone F ably led by Giant. Comr. Charles Ijeomah, echoed these demands but with practical efforts towards ensuring justice for our dear Chioma, emphasizing the need for accountability and improved student welfare protocols across Nigerian universities.
The tragic loss of Chioma Ajana has reignited discussions about emergency response systems and student welfare in Nigerian universities. NANS ZONE F likewise the Varsity SUG urged students to speak up and seek help early in emergencies, emphasizing that “UNIZIK is our home, and we all have a role to play in safeguarding it.”
Prof. Arinze-Umobi’s swift response, including the suspension of medical and security staff and the call for the hostel supervisor’s dismissal, signals the university’s commitment to addressing the incident. However, the broader university community continues to mourn, with many insisting that Chioma’s death must lead to meaningful change.
