ASUU Issues Ultimatum to FG, Threatens Significant Disruption to Nigeria’s Education Sector
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government of Nigeria urging swift action to resolve the lingering issues in our public universities. The deadline for said ultimatum, set for October 12, 2025, comes with a warning of a two weeks warning strike, potentially escalating into a total indefinite shutdown if demands are unmet, this of course will amount to a significant disruption to Nigeria’s education sector.
In a press release signed by ASUU President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna today, September 29, 2025, following the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at the University of Abuja, the union decried FG's persistent refusal to address its concerns which has been before them for over 16 years of raising the said issues, with intensified efforts over the past three months through media and public platforms.
According to the press release, the union's key demands include the renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement, sustainable funding, revitalization of universities, payment of 25–35% salary arrears, resolution of promotion arrears over four years, settlement of third-party deductions, and an end to the victimization of members at Lagos State University (LASU), Prince Abubakar Audu University (formerly KSU), and the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO). ASUU further expressed confidence in FG’s ability to resolve these challenges, likened the ultimatum to an alarm to the Nigerian Government towards averting the looming strike, and called on Nigerian citizens, religious leaders, traditional rulers, parents, students, and education stakeholders to press for action. “The struggle continues!” Piwuna concluded, thanking the press for their attention.
