USD NABS SUSPECTED ROBBERS IN AWKA, GIVES THEIR IDENTITY
The security operatives at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (UNIZIK), Anambra State, - UNIZIK Security Department, have in a decisive move to protect the university assets, arrested two individuals who did guise as scavengers - for reportedly stealing valuable property of the institution.
According to a statement sourced from the security department and made available to EruditeNewsBlog, the suspects who are being identified as Shehu Ibrahim and Sadiq Haruna, were apprehended on Wednesday, 4th September, 2025, following a meticulous investigation into the theft of an air conditioning unit from the university’s printing press.
"Ibrahim and Haruna had been posing as scavengers, blending into the campus environment to avoid suspicion. Under this pretext, they allegedly targeted and stole valuable university property, exploiting their access to restricted areas.. During investigation, we uncovered evidence linking the duo to the theft. Meanwhile, a search conducted at the time of their arrest revealed a more alarming discovery: one of the suspects was found in possession of a dagger component. This finding raised serious concerns about the potential threat the suspects posed to the safety of the university community, prompting swift action from the authorities. They were however in strict adherence to legal protocols, promptly handed over to the appropriate law enforcement agency for further investigation and prosecution." the statement reads in part.

The UNIZIK Security Department while praising the vigilance of its operatives and the cooperation of the university community in facilitating the investigation, reaffirmed its dedication towards protecting lives and property on/within the campus, and called on students and staff of the institution to remain proactive in reporting suspicious activities, emphasizing that collective responsibility is key to maintaining a safe and secure environment. “Security is a shared responsibility, we urge all members of the UNIZIK community to stay vigilant and promptly report any unusual behavior or activities to the appropriate authorities. Together, we can ensure that our campus remains a safe space for learning and growth.” they said.
The department also highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen campus security, including increased patrols, enhanced surveillance systems, and collaboration with external law enforcement agencies. These measures aim to deter future incidents and ensure swift responses to any threats.
Meanwhile, the arrest did spark discussions among students and concerned persons especially on the need for heightened awareness and improved security protocols. In the words of one of the concerned persons identified as Ogwo Wisdom Chibuike Esq. - a graduate of the school, "This same people are also robbing students on campus in the night within science village and ASUU secretariat areas." Also Ugah Kosiso disclosed that the same set of people have been terrorizing some lodges at Ifite especially now that school is not in session. "The generator of my opposite neighbor was stolen few days ago." He said.
Others commended the university’s security team for their quick action but have also called for additional measures, such as stricter access controls and regular security awareness campaigns, to prevent similar incidents in the future.
