Imagine applying for your dream course, but got transferred to another course that didn't match the dream course. Of course, it won't be funny. But then, what's your next line of action? This was the topic that did turn into a heated debate in today's conversation via my UNIZIK Aspirants Connect WhatsApp group, and drawing from the conversation, this article breaks down the key issues which I'll try to make bit concise and with very simple terms or wordings as possible so person no go come my DM say make I explain.
Kindly note that having this here is to make it accessible at any point in time; with the goal being to help prospective Zikites make smart choices that fit their life goals and that will help them build a future they'll be proud of. See conversation below:
Other parts of the conversation I wish to comment on:
Joeblaq: "Davido studied music Boss. Your entire generation no rich pass am"
Anonymous in response: "Destiny aren't same. Davido had passion for music so he went for it. Choices differs."
Fargo in a remark Anonymous Okayed: "What you study in school doesn’t really signify what you would become in future. I know how many people studied most of the professional courses but yet no job or money."
Richard: "Sha most people just go to school to answer graduates in the end.. last last, no be to bag the degree.. e sha no make sense... Think of it.. most of the time, na we dy contribute to our present state in the country.. no vex ooo, I know say he country sha no good.. but, no offense, wetin person wan use zoology for Nigeria??"
Cynthia reacting to Richard's take: "Richard is really making sense. Is better to try again next year? Not taking courses you know you don’t want to study but because say pressure Dey house you now want to study a Course that is not lucrative. And remember this is nigeria not Uk or USA. A back story: I want to Study law buh as Unizik give me philosophy will I study it no. Because that is not what I want to for my self. Are my going to write jamb again Yes."
Anonymous said: "Who get the strength for resitting jamb. With all the stress that I passed through in CBT center. Gfb! I don swear say I no go ever resit for that jamb. Never! "
Creative Raphaelz: "Let me tell you that, I had a friend who's also like a brother to me. This guy had to resit JAMB for over 3-4 years cus he had wanted to study law. But as it couldn't work out for him that way, he was given another course (English and literary study) even far from the law he had desired to study, so you could have imagined. He had to take the course and now he's even enjoying it now and to your surprise, he just graduated this year." Et al.
Addressing the issues:
Issue 1.) TRANSFER TO ANOTHER COURSE:
On being transferred to a course, first thing to do is; check if the new course spark any interest or aligns with your future plans - emphasis on what it can offer you in future. Don't just decide to accept the course because you want to answer graduate as Richard said or become a university student (University life is being prepared for ohh cause any grave mistake fit affect you for life here.), join your friends and not be left behind (Everyone has different destinies so don't be pressured) or escape washing plates at home. Just as I do tell persons rushing to marry - what we owe you on your wedding day na congratulations, everything u see for the marriage, na u and yourself; same way I am telling us wanting to rush enter school, what we owe you too na congratulations, life after university na U and yourself. Even those persons wey dey pressure you to enter go still come for you when after the school, life come hit you.
If you think the course can favour and still measure up to your dream course, go for it - for instance someone that applied for medicine but was given Human Nutrition & Dietics.. the course can still favour u and you may even shine brighter than in your original course. Yes you may not graduate as best student in it, but whenever they need someone that specialises in that area, they'll look for you - that's if you give it your best shot and approach it uniquely.
I've seen doctors and lawyers struggling, while others in Una alleged less popular fields thrive. Even a student studying Education in Igbo can go far in life if for instance she took it beyond classroom learning and exercise - show the world what you're learning and learnt so far through media. Era we neglect social media has pass ohh, the world is now going global.. Let me stop here on this cause going further another table will be shaked.
Issue 2.) SWITCHING AFTER 100L:
For persons who don't like a particular course they were transferred to, kindly note that you can after your 100 level, apply to switch departments if your Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is strong. The truth just as Anonymous said is that, switching isn't always a walk in the park, but trust me it's doable for many. The likely or rather reoccurring challenge is that your current department may not like your leaving the department - just like you being a smart student in your secondary school but one day decides to change school, day you'll meet your school principal or VP Academics or Dean of Studies, questions will land as say na interview u go. Another is - the switching na with a pay ohh. Not free. It varies from departments though. Aside the aforesaid, with a strong CGPA from 4.0, nothing is stopping your switching to another course.
Meanwhile, I know of many who had this switch in mind but along the line, comrades fell in love with the said course. Some I once asked, said they discovered hidden passions or see how it fits their strengths better...
Issue 3.) COURSES/DEGREES OF LOW VALUE - Most people go to school to answer graduates.
Please no degree or course isn't valued in Nigeria. It all boils down to what you do with it as I already explained in this article. But as Richard partly said before brother start dey throw stray bullet upandan, Nigeria na something else but we shouldn't allow Nigeria happen to us. If you start believing you need government or a better country to prosper, u'll end up not prospering. Prosperity is from He that formed you and to be prosperous is of you that has been given the will power working towards it.
Issue 4.) RESITTING FOR JAMB UTME:
Normally considering resitting for JAMB UTME do sound daunting, but it's not the end of the world. I'll use myself as example. I resat after misinformation messed up my first attempt ~ even as a blogger then. It was a slap on my face Shaa, Lol. I knew less of anything about UNIZIK admission then to wit subject combination et al. - which is major reason why I do have Aspirants forum each year... I decided to resit 3 weeks to the exam having waited much and being pressured by family cause I believe my aggregate was okay not knowing I was already off track the process. Then, UNIZIK admission portal will in your dashboard show your aggregate score and the computation sef. I saw mine before I made the decision, it pained me bitterly that I swore to deal with the 200L guy when I meet him (I later didn't Shaa cause somehow I later begin to appreciate that it happened that way. Chill, I'll come to this later).
3 weeks to JAMB UTME - thanks to God for the extension cause I already missed the first deadline, I registered for another JAMB exam, this time no mistake. The anger of having to wait another year most especially watching my classmates enter university, made me very serious in my preparation for the exam. Librarians in a library by my diocese saw the fire in my eyes and so even allowed me stay beyond closing hour. To avoid sleeping, I do buy stick sweet, if I lick it finish I'll start chewing the stick top that way sleep go avoid me. I wasn't even smiling at all those days... The exam came and passed, then the result - it was very much better than the first that I was even among the first to be admitted into law sef. I'd and still appreciate persons that also helped cause Omo they felt my pain...
So, resitting isn't bad, what matters is the efforts you put in the second journey. If you believe you can, you can, otherwise comot body make you no go dey chop resit like national cake. To me it was that my desired course or nothing and funny UNIZIK or no other. Lol. And I gave in my very efforts...
Meanwhile, on why I later appreciate my having to wait a year extra immediately after secondary school: I learnt many things about life I didn't in my 6 years as a boarder, including skills and little tech knowledge.
In summary, everything na base on our individual choices and decisions all anchored on our dreams or life aspirations. And do note that University isn't just about getting a degree; it's about growing into someone who can handle life's challenges.
Good luck and congratulations to persons already admitted.
